Semi-monthly Update!

It's been awhile! I've been working, working, and playing on my days off. I'm mostly at Character Spot these days. Tomorrow I'm breaker-sel;f explanatory, you give people breaks. Then next week, I'm at Character Spot for 4 days and then one day with Duffy-my first shift working with him! He's so cuddly.

A few days ago, a young-ish mom and her young daughter were waiting to meet Minnie Mouse. Her daughter was holding a beat up Care Bear, whose ear was falling off. I smiled and said "Hi Princess! Wow, that bear looks well-loved." She said "yeah, it's my brother's." I said "How nice that he gave it to you! What a good present." Her mom looks at me with tears in her eyes and says "It was his bear, and this was his Make A Wish trip. He passed away 2 weeks before we were supposed to go. We decided to come for him, and bring his bear so we would have a piece of him with us." OH GOD. I started to tear up and said "I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you have a wonderful trip, for him."

I posted the story on Facebook, and a friend of mine who hangs out with Alice read and it and wrote the next day to tell me she "spent like 45 minutes with them inside (and outside), she showed me pics of the little boy smiling! And the little girl was the cutest ever!!!! Alice even got her a huge Cheshire cat as a gift! She LOVED coloring and even gave me the biggest hug and kiss goodbye! Thanks for posting the story so I knew about it!!!!!" Ahh, the power of social media used for good.

I met Belle at Town Square, and the Photopass photographer decided to take a video! I had no idea until I was looking at it on my computer hours later.

On my last day off, I went to Magic Kingdom. I didn't find anything at Property Control-I'm still searching for the perfect t-shirt for my Dad. After the futile search, I went to the park to meet Ariel and Prince Eric so I could get them to sign my Ariel purse. Prince Eric remembered me! I then got a fastpass for Town Square Theatre, where I met Belle, Cinderella and Rapunzel! I got to kiss Mickey Mouse on his nose in front of Minne; something I had wanted to do for awhile. Belle blew me a kiss during the 3:00 parade, I got a surprise fastpass for Dumbo, and finally got to ride the refurbished Big Thunder Mountain rollercoaster! It was a great day.
This is when I was waving madly at Belle in the parade

Epcot's celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, so there was a cast party! I met Mickey, Minnie and Goofy in 80's clothing, ate lots of free food (pasta salad, green beans with tomatoes, beans and rice, really good bread twice-mashed potatoes) and ice cream (I had 2 Mickey bars and a strawberry bar), watched an Epcot Iron Chef competition, and saw Mickey dance to "Cotton Eyed Joe". I like that Disney makes magic for their cast members.

I can't believe it's already September! I got into the Candlelight Processional, my first rehearsal is on Tuesday! I can't wait, I haven't sung in a choir since high school. Also, the Halloween parties start next week! I'm going twice, on the 11th and 25th. My Mom made me a fantastic Wendy dress for my birthday, and I can't wait to wear it. I'm also getting ready to apply for some Disney Professional Internships. My program ends in January, and I don't like seeing this gray fog when I start thinking about after January 2, 2013.

Finally, a post!

I've been here for two months, as of yesterday. I love, love, love my job as a Character Attendant. One day, I'm in Morocco with Aladdin and Jasmine, the next I'm with Belle and the Beast in France, Mary Poppins in the United Kingdom, Character Spot with MickeyMinniePlutoDonaldGoofy, or in Mexico with Mexican Donald. I love the variety, I love talking to guests, I love reading the 'fur characters' animation for the guests- "Chip loves your tiara, princess!" "Will you give Donald a kiss on the beak?", I love the responsibility. I help the characters get their costumes ready, get them off set on time every set, and talk to more guests.

Here are some stories. I had a mom getting upset with me one day at Aladdin and Jasmine, and she told me that I had ruined her daughter's trip. She kept yelling at me, until her daughter put her hand on her mom's arm and said "It's okay Mom. I don't need to meet Jasmine." Thanks, mature child! She was about 9.

In Mexico one day, Donald was getting ready to head back to Character Spot for the night, and I had closed the line. A man walked up me and asked politely if he could get in line. I had to say no, because I had been telling others no. He then told me it was his birthday and he loved the Three Caballeros more than anything else at Disney World.  We chatted for a bit, and then a light went off in my brain. I told him to wait by the stairs, and as Donald left, I would make sure that he got a picture with him. He thanked me profusely, and went to wait by the stairs. I told Donald that he had one more guest to greet, and led him over to the stairs. The man-he looked about 30, and all muscle-gave Donald a giant hug, and took a few pictures with him. He then started to cry. He said "Donald, I just love you, man!" Donald gave him another huge hug, and the man thanked me profusely as he left, saying that I had made his night-and his birthday.

Another day with Aladdin and Jasmine, I started talking to a very bright girl from Scotland. She was 9, and we talked about our mutual love of reading, especially Harry Potter. When I told her I had to leave her to close the line, she said "Dad, I really like Anna. Can we give her something too?" She handed me a bookmark made from wild heather from Scotland, and wrote on the back "with love from Faye". I was really touched. It's holding my place in The Hobbit right now.

Working with the characters gives me some magical moments every day. I know that it sucks if a line is closed, and it does suck that not everyone can meet a character. I have lots of empathy for the guests, which might be why I'm good at my job. I've heard nothing but positive reviews from my managers, my performance specialists and analysts, the characters I work with, most Photopass photographers, and my captains. My program ends in January, and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do then. I'm going to apply for a few professional internships, I might try to extend my College Program so I can continue to live in CP housing and take the bus, thereby saving more money for a car, I might try and go full time for a few years as a Character Attendant-I don't know! Everything seems very up in the air right now.

I did get a new name tag today! I graduated back in May, but my name tag had 'University of Montana' on it. I was getting a little tired of everyone asking me what year I was-I'm graduated! So it now says 'Helena, MT'. I'm looking forward to seeing how people pronounce my capital city. I've only met two other Cast Members from Montana so far, both Character Attendants from Missoula, where my university is.

My schedule for the next two weeks looks like this:
7/23 4:30-9:45, Crystal Palace, Magic Kingdom
7/24 10:45-6:30, France, Belle and Beast
7/25 11:45-7:30, UK, Mary Poppins
7/26 off! I'm going to a free wine seminar in Italy
7/27 off! I promised to visit a friend in France
7/28 8:30-4:30, Character Spot
7/29 11:15-7, UK, Alice in Wonderland
7/30 off!
7/31 10:45-6:30, France, Belle and Beast
8/1 12:45-8:30, UK, Pooh and Tigger
8/2 8:30-4:30, Character Spot
8/3 off!
8/4 10:45-6:30, France, Belle and Beast

Epcot has the best hours, character-wise. I hardly ever start early.

I am having a little trouble making friends. When I get done with work, I want to eat dinner, call my mom and dad, and go to bed. I get up about an hour and half before work starts to catch my bus. Also, because I work with different people every day, and a lot of them are full time-they have their own plans and friends. I got free tickets to Brave for working the Highland Games, and I haven't been able to find anyone to go with me. I have lots of acquaintances, but it's a different atmosphere from my first program in Attractions at Fantasyland, where I worked with the same people every night and we spent a lot of time together. I'm sure I'll make more friends in time, and I really like my 5 roommates. We all have such different schedules, and I go to the parks by myself a lot, so we never see each other.

One of my favorite occurrences at work is when a guest hands me their camera and says some variation of "it's the button right there". Oh, on the top to the right? Like on every camera ever made? Awesome.

I love my job! It's the perfect job for me after college graduation.

Earned my ears

I've been here for a week now, and I've been busy. After Casting on Monday, I had a housing meeting on Tuesday, Traditions on Wednesday, 'Welcome to Entertainment!' on Thursday, and training from Friday until today. I've been waking up from 6am-7am every day for work at 8 or 9am and working until about 5pm. My 4 fellow CP attendants and I learned about all sorts of guest situations, creating storylines, the basics, the four keys, all that kind of thing. On our third day of training, we went out onstage with characters for the first time! I worked with Gideon (the hobo-looking cat from Pinocchio), Goofy and his son Max, and Pluto. They were all great. Mickey also made an appearance, as did Captain Hook, Smee, Chip and Dale, and Baloo. I worked with Gideon the first set, so he'll always be close to my heart.

Today, I got to work with Rafiki! He's my brother's favorite Disney character, so I was thrilled. Goofy and Max and Captain Hook and Smee were back; Donald Duck, Terk (from Tarzan), King Louie, Meeko, and the Genie were out today! However, because of Tropical Storm Beryl, it started raining and didn't stop all afternoon. The characters went to get dried off, and the attendants went to practice more at Character Spot. It's a room where you can meet Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald, and Goofy in about 10-15 minutes. All you have to do is wait in line and be patient. I worked with Minnie for the first time, which was delightful. She always knows just how to pose!

After I took my assessment test (40 multiple choice questions, I only got 2 wrong!), I ended up talking to a handsome Canadian guy on the bus ride home.

I have a park orientation tomorrow at Epcot, and then I have the afternoon free. I'm going to wander around Epcot, get creme brulee, meet Aladdin and Jasmine, Marie, Belle and the Beast, and Snow White. Then I might head to Magic Kingdom for funsises. My roommates and I are going to House of Blues, and then I have Wednesday off, so I'm going to go play in Magic Kingdom with my roommate Kaitlin! We're going to meet Merida!

Thursday, I work from 5:45am-7pm. I have a 4 hour training shift, and then I work by myself for the first time, with Marie in France! I can't wait. I'm also going to work at Morocco with Aladdin and Jasmine, and the UK with Pooh and Tigger.

This job is the best. I feel magical!

I'm here! I checked in yesterday at 8am, got a 3 bedroom in Patterson. I then waited 2 and a half hours outside Chatham for the bus to Casting. Boooo. When I got there, I was given my schedule. Through Thursday. I wish I knew the rest of the week, but that'll come. I then got fingerprinted, filled out more paperwork, and learned about the class choices. I want to take a lecture class in the fall. After unpacking some, and making out beds, my roommate and I went food shopping at Wal-Mart, then unpacked more. I talked to my parents and my brother, then went to bed at 10pm.

I slept for 12 hours, it was glorious.

Today I had to go back to Casting, because my fingerprints didn't get scanned properly.

I have my housing meeting today, Traditions tomorrow, and my Welcome to Entertainment class on Thursday! It's going to be a good week.

23 days!

Today my brother asked me what I was taking to Disney. My answer: 2 suitcases, backpack, and my purse. My mom's going to mail me a box with my Wii, and another box in November with a winter coat and my long johns. My brother's response was "I'm tickled by the fact that you own long johns and wear them."

My brother is the best.
Also, I got my first tattoo today! It says "All was well" in the Aladdin movie font.
It's on the inside arch of my left foot, and I'm completely in love with it. The full post about it is here, if you want to read about how painful it was, or about the decision, or about the amazing tattoo artist I had.
I love it so much! It's fully within the Disney Look guidelines as well.

There's now less than 2 months until I fly to Orlando! I can't wait! I'm making plans to sell my TV, bike and mini-fridge. I'm also mentally packing my suitcases.
I can't wait!
